The Master’s Programme in Biology - Ecosystems and Aquatic Ecology is a two-year, full-time on-campus program that focuses on the structure, function, and dynamics of ecosystems in aquatic and terrestrial environments. The program explores how organisms interact with each other and their environment, and how ecosystems respond to natural changes and human impact. Students study topics such as aquatic ecology, ecosystem processes, biodiversity, environmental change, and ecological modeling and monitoring methods.
Graduates develop strong ecological research skills, environmental systems analysis expertise, and field and laboratory competence, preparing them for careers in environmental agencies, conservation organizations, research institutes, and doctoral studies. Uppsala University offers a strong research-intensive environment with access to diverse ecosystems and advanced ecological research facilities.

Graduates of the Biology - Ecosystems and Aquatic Ecology Master’s program are well-prepared for careers in aquatic biology, environmental research, conservation, and ecosystem restoration. With expertise in aquatic ecosystems, environmental conservation, and species interactions, alumni can pursue roles as aquatic ecologists, marine biologists, environmental consultants, and research scientists. The growing concern for aquatic biodiversity and environmental sustainability ensures strong career prospects for graduates in governmental agencies, research institutions, and conservation organizations.
The Biology - Ecosystems and Aquatic Ecology program provides students with a solid foundation in the study of aquatic ecosystems, including freshwater and marine environments. Students will gain hands-on experience in field studies, lab research, and data analysis, preparing them to address critical environmental issues such as water pollution, habitat destruction, and species conservation. The program’s interdisciplinary approach ensures that graduates are well-equipped to pursue careers in conservation, research, and policy-making to protect global aquatic ecosystems.
