The Master of Science in Chemistry (Joint Degree UvA–VU) – Chemistry of Life at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam) and the University of Amsterdam is a two-year, full-time on-campus program that focuses on the chemical processes underlying living systems. The program bridges chemistry, biology, and biophysics to study molecular mechanisms in areas such as drug design, enzymatic reactions, biomolecular interactions, and chemical biology. Students gain both theoretical knowledge and practical laboratory experience in modern chemical and life science research.
Graduates are well-prepared for careers in pharmaceutical industries, biotechnology companies, chemical research institutes, and PhD programs in chemistry or related life sciences. Through a curriculum focused on chemical biology, molecular life sciences, and advanced laboratory research, students develop the scientific and experimental skills needed to understand and manipulate chemical processes in biological systems.
Semester 1 – Foundations in Chemistry of Life
Semester 2 – Advanced Chemistry of Life
Semester 3 – Specialization in Chemistry of Life
Semester 4 – Master’s Thesis & Research Project
Graduates of the Chemistry of Life Master’s program are highly sought after in pharmaceutical research, biotechnology, and environmental chemistry. With expertise in the chemistry of biological systems, graduates are well-equipped for roles in research and development in both academic and industrial sectors. The growing need for innovative pharmaceutical solutions and sustainable chemical processes ensures strong career prospects in both the public and private sectors.
The Chemistry of Life Master’s program, offered as a joint degree, provides students with an interdisciplinary approach that bridges chemistry with life sciences. Students will explore molecular biology, biochemistry, and pharmaceutical chemistry while gaining hands-on research experience. This program prepares graduates to tackle challenges in drug development, environmental sustainability, and biomedical research.
