
The Master of Arts in Development Studies at the University of Passau offers an interdisciplinary and globally focused approach to understanding the complex processes of economic, political, and social development. This four-semester, full-time international program, taught in English, admits students in the winter semester only. It prepares graduates to analyse and address contemporary development challenges—ranging from poverty and inequality to environmental sustainability—through a combination of economics, political science, sociology, and regional studies.

Students can specialise in areas such as Economics, Southeast Asian Studies, Sociology and Politics, Sustainability and Resources, or Geographies of Development. Graduates of the M.A. in Development Studies are prepared for careers in international organisations, development agencies, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and policy think tanks. The program’s combination of theoretical depth and practical training also provides a strong foundation for pursuing a Ph.D. in Development Studies, Political Economy, or Sustainability Science.
