The Master of Science in Digital Humanities (Data Science) at the University of Southampton combines the fields of data science and the humanities to help students analyze and interpret large datasets in cultural and historical contexts. This one-year, full-time program focuses on data-driven methods and tools, such as machine learning and digital archiving, for analyzing human culture, history, and society.
The on-campus program offers hands-on experience with digital tools and humanities-based research projects. Graduates are prepared for careers in digital archives, research institutions, museums, and data analysis, where they can apply data science to solve problems in the humanities.
Semester 1 – Foundations of Digital Humanities and Data Science

Graduates of this program can pursue careers in digital research, data science, and humanities-related technology. Common roles include data scientist, digital humanities specialist, data analyst, and research software developer. Graduates can work in academic institutions, cultural heritage organizations, museums, libraries, publishing houses, and technology firms, using data-driven approaches to analyze and interpret cultural, historical, and literary data. Opportunities also exist in data consulting, software development, and archival preservation, where data science techniques are applied to humanities research and digital preservation.
