The Dutch and Serbian or Croatian Language Studies program at University College London (UCL) is a four-year, full-time course that provides students with the opportunity to master both Dutch and Serbian or Croatian, while exploring the cultural, historical, and literary traditions of the Netherlands and the South Slavic region. This program offers a unique interdisciplinary approach, combining the study of two distinct European languages and cultures.
UCL’s program blends intensive language training with in-depth cultural studies, preparing graduates for careers in translation, international relations, publishing, and cultural diplomacy, particularly in regions where Dutch, Serbian, or Croatian are spoken.
The first two years focus on intensive language training in both Dutch and Serbian or Croatian, covering grammar, syntax, and vocabulary. Alongside language instruction, students will explore the history, literature, and culture of the Netherlands, Serbia, and Croatia. In the final two years, students can specialize in areas such as linguistics, literary analysis, and cultural studies, with opportunities for study abroad in Dutch- or Serbian/Croatian-speaking regions to further immerse in both languages.
Graduates can pursue careers in translation, international business, publishing, journalism, education, and cultural exchange. The program also prepares students for roles in diplomacy, research, and cultural institutions, particularly related to the Netherlands or the Balkans.
UCL’s Dutch and Serbian or Croatian Language Studies program offers a unique combination of two culturally significant languages. The program benefits from UCL’s strong academic reputation, expert faculty, and access to a wide range of resources, providing students with the skills and global network necessary for successful careers in international and cultural fields.
