The Master’s Programme in Earth Science - Palaeobiology is a two-year, full-time on-campus program that focuses on the study of ancient life and Earth’s geological history through fossil records and geological evidence. The program combines paleontology, geology, and evolutionary biology to understand how life on Earth has changed over millions of years and how past environmental conditions shaped biodiversity. Students study topics such as fossil analysis, stratigraphy, evolutionary patterns, paleoecology, and Earth system evolution.
Graduates develop strong paleobiological research skills, geological analysis expertise, and evolutionary interpretation competence, preparing them for careers in research institutions, museums, geological surveys, environmental consultancy, and doctoral studies. Uppsala University offers a strong research environment with access to rich fossil collections and advanced Earth science laboratories.
Semester 1 – Foundations of Palaeobiology
• Introduction to Paleontology and Fossil Records
• Evolution of Life on Earth

Graduates of the Earth Science - Palaeobiology Master’s program can pursue careers in paleontology, museum curation, archaeological research, and environmental consulting. With expertise in studying ancient life forms and ecosystems, alumni can work as paleobiologists, museum curators, research scientists, and conservation consultants. The increasing interest in understanding Earth’s past and its relationship to modern climate and ecological changes ensures strong career opportunities in academia, research institutions, and cultural heritage management.
The Earth Science - Palaeobiology program offers students the opportunity to study the evolution of life on Earth, focusing on fossils, ancient ecosystems, and extinction events. Students will gain hands-on experience through fieldwork, excavation, and laboratory research, preparing them for careers in research, museums, and environmental consulting. The program combines geology, biology, and environmental science, ensuring that graduates are well-equipped to contribute to the understanding and preservation of ancient biodiversity.
