The Master’s Programme in Ecosystems and Aquatic Ecology is a two-year, full-time on-campus program that focuses on the structure, function, and dynamics of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. The program explores how organisms interact with each other and their environments, and how ecological systems respond to natural and human-induced changes. Students study topics such as aquatic ecology, ecosystem processes, biodiversity, environmental change, and ecological modeling.
Graduates develop strong ecological research skills, environmental analysis expertise, and field and laboratory competence, preparing them for careers in environmental agencies, conservation organizations, research institutions, and doctoral studies. Uppsala University offers a strong research environment with access to diverse field sites and advanced ecological research facilities.

Graduates of the Ecosystems and Aquatic Ecology Master’s program are well-prepared for careers in environmental consulting, marine biology, conservation research, and aquatic ecosystem management. With expertise in aquatic ecosystems, biodiversity, and environmental monitoring, alumni can work as aquatic ecologists, marine biologists, environmental consultants, and research scientists. The growing focus on preserving aquatic ecosystems and addressing issues like climate change and pollution ensures strong career prospects in both academia and environmental organizations.
The Ecosystems and Aquatic Ecology program provides students with a deep understanding of aquatic ecosystems, including freshwater and marine environments. Students will engage in fieldwork, lab studies, and data analysis to explore the relationships between aquatic organisms and their habitats. This program prepares graduates to address critical environmental challenges, particularly in the fields of conservation, ecosystem restoration, and sustainable water resource management.
