English Language and Literature (Doctorate)
This doctorate is aimed at master's graduates ready to commit to a single research question rather than broaden their coverage of the field. Its listed areas of study, English language and literature, cultural studies and applied linguistics, mark out the territory a candidate chooses from, and the three elective seminars running through the first three semesters give room to narrow that choice before a topic is fixed. The taught phase ends with a comprehensive examination in written and interview form, then a thesis proposal that is presented and defended.
After that the weighting changes. Semesters five through eight are devoted to independent research and dissertation writing worth 120 ECTS, together with data collection, analysis and the development of an academic portfolio, half of the eight semesters spent on one body of work. Entry is not subject to an admission quota, but it is offered in the fall semester only, and teaching is full-time and on campus at Beytepe in Ankara. Prospective candidates should therefore plan around a continuous, in-person commitment across all four years.
