The English Literature and Classics (Hons) program at the University of Edinburgh offers an exciting interdisciplinary approach to studying two of the most influential areas of literature and culture. This Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree combines the study of English literature, from medieval to contemporary works, with the exploration of classical texts and civilizations from ancient Greece and Rome.
Over four years of full-time study, students will engage with foundational literary texts in both English and Classical traditions, developing critical reading, writing, and analytical skills, preparing them for careers in education, publishing, research, and beyond.
The English Literature and Classics (Hons) program integrates the study of English literary traditions with classical languages and literature. In the first two years, students will study key English literary works, classical texts, and fundamental themes in both fields, while developing language skills in Latin or Ancient Greek. The final years allow for more specialized courses, such as classical mythology, English literary theory, and comparative studies, with opportunities for independent research projects and interdisciplinary work.
Graduates of the English Literature and Classics (Hons) program are well-prepared for careers in publishing, education, research, and cultural heritage management. The programโs interdisciplinary nature also prepares students for roles in the arts, museums, archives, and media, as well as further study in either English literature, classical studies, or related fields.
