The Master of Science in Evolution, Ecology and Systematics is an internationally oriented graduate program offered by Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU). Designed for students aiming to deepen their understanding of biological diversity, evolutionary processes, and ecological interactions, this full-time degree combines theoretical knowledge with practical research experience. Spanning four semesters, the program covers systematics, evolutionary biology, and ecological methods, preparing students for careers in research, conservation, and biodiversity management. Admission is offered exclusively in the winter semester, and the main language of instruction is English.
Located in Munich, one of Europe’s leading academic and research centers, the program offers students access to LMU’s state-of-the-art laboratories, field research sites, and international collaboration opportunities. Participants may optionally join the Erasmus-Mundus Master in Evolutionary Biology (MEME) program, earning a degree jointly with partner universities in the Netherlands, Sweden, or France. With its focus on interdisciplinary training, cutting-edge research, and global scientific networks, the Master of Science in Evolution, Ecology and Systematics equips graduates for impactful careers in academia, environmental organizations, and international research institutions.
Semester 1 – Foundations of Evolution and Ecology
Semester 2 – Advanced Methods and Applications
Semester 3 – Specialization & International Exchange
Semester 4 – Master’s Thesis & Final Project
Graduates of the Master of Science in Evolution, Ecology and Systematics are prepared for diverse careers in biological research, environmental conservation, and biodiversity management. Career paths include evolutionary biologist, ecologist, conservation scientist, research associate, and environmental consultant. Students also have opportunities to work with international research institutions, universities, museums, and NGOs focused on biodiversity, ecosystem management, and environmental policy.
Choosing the Master of Science in Evolution, Ecology and Systematics means joining a program that combines academic excellence with international research experience. Offered by Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, it provides students with access to state-of-the-art laboratories, field stations, and collaboration with global partner universities through the Erasmus-Mundus Master in Evolutionary Biology (MEME) program.
The program’s unique strength lies in its integration of theoretical knowledge, hands-on research, and international perspectives.
