The French and Spanish Language Studies program at University College London (UCL) is a four-year, full-time course that allows students to become proficient in both French and Spanish, while exploring the rich cultural, historical, and literary traditions of these two major European languages. The program offers a comprehensive approach, integrating language acquisition with deep cultural insights into the societies where these languages are spoken.
UCL’s program combines rigorous language training with cultural studies, preparing graduates for careers in translation, international relations, publishing, and cultural diplomacy.
The first two years focus on intensive language training in both French and Spanish, covering grammar, vocabulary, and conversation. In addition to language courses, students explore the literature, culture, and history of France and Spain, as well as the broader Spanish-speaking world. The final two years provide more specialized courses in linguistics, translation, and literature, with opportunities for study abroad in French- or Spanish-speaking regions.
Graduates can pursue careers in translation, publishing, international business, education, journalism, and cultural exchange. The program also offers strong foundations for roles in diplomacy, cultural institutions, and further academic study in linguistics or international relations.
UCL’s French and Spanish Language Studies program offers a unique combination of two globally significant languages. With UCL’s academic excellence, expert faculty, and international connections, students gain the skills and cultural understanding needed for diverse and rewarding careers in both European and global contexts.
