The Global Health program at the University of Duke equips students with the knowledge and analytical tools necessary to understand and address complex health challenges across different regions of the world. Over the course of four years, students explore the biological, environmental, economic, and sociopolitical determinants of health while critically examining the disparities that shape access to care and health outcomes globally. The curriculum combines public health theory with practical engagement, helping students analyze how disease burdens vary across countries and how interventions can be designed for sustainable impact in low- and high-resource settings alike.
Through coursework in epidemiology, global health systems, biostatistics, and ethics, students develop a strong interdisciplinary foundation. Fieldwork, case studies, and applied research enhance learning by exposing students to real-world health challenges and policies. Students also explore subjects like infectious disease control, maternal and child health, health equity, and emergency response. The program promotes cross-cultural understanding, systems thinking, and collaborative problem-solving. It prepares students not only for immediate engagement in global health projects but also for further study or careers in health policy, medicine, humanitarian response, and international development.
