

The Master of Studies in Greek and/or Latin Languages and Literature at the University of Oxford is a full-time, 9-month program designed for students seeking to deepen their knowledge of Classical languages and literature. The program offers an in-depth study of Ancient Greek and Latin, exploring the literary, historical, philosophical, and linguistic aspects of texts from the Classical world. Students will engage with key works from Greek philosophy, tragic and comic drama, epic poetry, historiography, and rhetoric, and gain an understanding of the cultural and intellectual context in which these texts were produced.
Oxford’s MSt in Greek and/or Latin Languages and Literature combines linguistic training with literary analysis, allowing students to gain fluency in both languages while exploring the legacy of the Classical world and its influence on modern thought. Graduates are well-prepared for careers in academic research, teaching, publishing, and roles related to Classical studies.
The MSt in Greek and/or Latin Languages and Literature offers core modules in Classical languages (Greek and/or Latin), literary analysis, and Classical culture. Students will study literary works from the Classical Greek and Roman traditions, examining texts from key philosophical, literary, and historical authors. Students will also have the opportunity to specialize in areas such as Greek tragedy, epic poetry, Roman rhetoric, and Classical philosophy. The program includes language classes for translation, syntax, and linguistics, alongside research seminars to explore the historical and cultural contexts of the texts. The program culminates in a dissertation, where students will conduct independent research on a specific topic within Greek or Latin literature.
Graduates of the MSt in Greek and/or Latin Languages and Literature are well-prepared for careers in academic research, teaching, Classical studies, publishing, and education. Many alumni continue their studies with doctoral research in Classical languages, literature, philosophy, or history. Others work as teachers, academic consultants, translators, or curators in museums and galleries. The program also provides opportunities for graduates to pursue careers in arts management, cultural heritage, and intellectual history. Graduates may also work in media, publishing, or non-governmental organizations related to Classical scholarship and education.
