The Hungarian and Yiddish Language Studies program at University College London (UCL) is a four-year, full-time course that enables students to gain proficiency in both Hungarian and Yiddish, while exploring the rich cultural, historical, and literary traditions of Hungary and the Jewish communities that speak Yiddish. The program combines intensive language learning with an in-depth study of the cultural and social contexts of both languages.
UCL’s program offers students the unique opportunity to explore two distinct European cultures, equipping graduates with language skills and cultural knowledge essential for careers in translation, cultural heritage, research, and international relations.
The program offers a comprehensive approach, starting with language acquisition in both Hungarian and Yiddish. In addition to language studies, students engage with the literature, history, and cultural dynamics of Hungary and Jewish communities. The final two years allow for specialization in literature, linguistics, and cultural history, with the option to study abroad to immerse in Hungarian or Yiddish-speaking regions.
Graduates can pursue careers in translation, international relations, publishing, journalism, and cultural exchange. The program also provides strong foundations for roles in academia, heritage preservation, and education, especially in the context of Central and Eastern European cultures and Jewish studies.
UCL’s Hungarian and Yiddish Language Studies program offers a unique academic experience, combining language proficiency with deep cultural understanding. The program benefits from UCL’s academic excellence, expert faculty, and access to a global network, preparing students for a variety of professional paths in both linguistic and cultural sectors.
