Operations Research

The four-year sequence works as a stack, each layer assuming the one below it. General mathematics comes first — calculus, linear algebra, probability and statistics — and the methods specific to operations research only arrive once that base is in place: optimisation, stochastic processes, simulation, data modelling. Year three turns those methods outward into decision analysis, game theory and logistics, with a first real choice between supply chain analytics and risk management. Little of the later material is reachable without the layer beneath it, which makes the early quantitative terms load-bearing rather than introductory.

The final year is where the degree becomes individual: advanced work on network optimisation and data-driven decision making, electives in healthcare analytics and financial engineering, and either an independent research project or an applied internship. Its Bachelor of Arts designation is not incidental: critical thinking and academic writing sit in the first year, and economics and computer science material is folded in alongside the engineering side. All four years are taught on Rice's Houston campus.
