The Master’s Programme in Palaeobiology is a two-year, full-time on-campus program that explores the history of life on Earth through the study of fossils and ancient biological systems. The program combines earth sciences, evolutionary biology, and geology to understand how organisms and ecosystems have developed over geological time. Students study topics such as fossil analysis, evolutionary patterns, paleoecology, and earth system history, gaining both theoretical knowledge and practical field and laboratory experience.
Graduates develop strong analytical skills, paleontological expertise, and research competence, preparing them for careers in academia, museums, geological surveys, environmental consultancy, and research institutions. Uppsala University offers a strong research environment in earth sciences, enabling students to work closely with fossil records and reconstruct the history of life on Earth.
Semester 1 – Foundations of Palaeobiology
• Introduction to Palaeobiology
• Evolutionary Theory and Fossil Records
• Earth’s History and Life Forms
• Research Methods in Palaeobiology
Semester 2 – Advanced Palaeobiology
• Fossil Identification and Classification
• Evolutionary Patterns and Extinction Events
• Geobiology and Paleoecology
• Elective Modules in Palaeobiology

Graduates of the Palaeobiology Master’s program are prepared for careers in paleontology, environmental science, museum curation, and academic research. With expertise in the study of ancient life forms and ecosystems, alumni can work as paleobiologists, museum curators, research scientists, and environmental consultants. Many graduates work in museums, research institutions, or environmental organizations, contributing to our understanding of past climates, ecosystems, and life on Earth.
The Palaeobiology program offers a unique opportunity to study the ancient history of life on Earth. Students will engage in hands-on fieldwork and laboratory research, studying fossils and ancient ecosystems. The program provides both theoretical and practical knowledge in paleontology, preparing graduates for careers in research, museums, and environmental consulting. The program’s interdisciplinary approach also allows students to explore related fields such as geology and ecology, ensuring a well-rounded education in the life sciences.
