The Scandinavian Studies and History program at University College London (UCL) is a four-year, full-time course that combines the study of Scandinavian languages and cultures with a strong focus on historical analysis. Students will explore the history of the Nordic countries, from the Viking Age to modern times, alongside learning the languages and literature of the region.
UCL’s program provides a unique interdisciplinary approach, equipping students with the tools to understand both the historical and cultural developments of Scandinavia. Graduates are prepared for careers in history, cultural research, education, and international relations.
The program begins with foundational courses in Scandinavian languages, such as Swedish, Danish, and Norwegian, while introducing students to the rich history of the Nordic countries. In later years, students delve deeper into specific historical periods, alongside advanced language study. The final year includes a research project or dissertation, allowing students to specialize in an area of Scandinavian history.
Graduates can pursue careers in education, research, museums, and cultural heritage. The program also prepares students for roles in international relations, diplomatic services, and cultural exchange, particularly in Nordic countries or related organizations.
UCL’s Scandinavian Studies and History program offers an interdisciplinary and immersive experience, combining language skills with historical expertise. The program benefits from UCL’s world-class faculty, access to global resources, and opportunities for internships and study abroad, providing students with the skills needed for a wide range of international careers.
