The Theatre – Playwriting Master of Arts program at Texas University is a three-year, full-time on-campus graduate degree that nurtures the creative and critical talents of aspiring playwrights through a focused, practice-based academic journey. This program provides in-depth training in dramatic structure, character development, dialogue crafting, and thematic exploration, allowing students to develop their own voice while engaging with diverse theatrical traditions. Through intensive workshops, seminars, and production collaborations, students learn to write plays that speak powerfully to contemporary audiences across a variety of cultural, political, and aesthetic landscapes.
The curriculum encourages exploration, experimentation, and revision, equipping students to develop scripts from concept to stage-ready form. Faculty mentorship, peer feedback, and partnerships with directing and acting students foster a collaborative environment where work is regularly developed and staged. Students also engage with theatre history, critical theory, and interdisciplinary influences, building a foundation for thoughtful, socially engaged writing. Over the course of three years, students complete multiple full-length plays, culminating in a final thesis project that reflects their growth as storytellers, artists, and cultural commentators.
Year 1 – Foundations of Playwriting and Storycraft
Year 2 – Technique, Collaboration, and Critical Response

Graduates of this program are prepared for dynamic roles in theatre companies, television and film writing, publishing, and arts education. Many work as playwrights, script consultants, dramaturgs, and creative writing instructors in regional theatres, residency programs, universities, and nonprofit arts organizations. Their training equips them to develop original theatrical works, collaborate across disciplines, and contribute to cultural conversations through performance. Some alumni transition into screenwriting or interactive storytelling platforms, while others pursue fellowships or MFA/PhD programs to further specialize. With strong writing portfolios, experience in staged productions, and a deep understanding of the craft, graduates are positioned to shape the future of storytelling on stage and beyond.
This program combines rigorous artistic training, collaborative production experience, and individualized mentorship, making it ideal for writers who want to develop bold, original voices in theatre. Texas University provides a vibrant performance culture where students see their work brought to life in readings and full productions, gaining invaluable insight into the creative process.
