Biomedical Engineering

What separates biomedical engineering from the disciplines it borrows from is where the finished work ends up: in a clinic, in contact with a patient, in the hands of someone trained medically rather than technically. The curriculum is arranged around that endpoint. Medical devices and biological systems come first, then biomaterials and biomechanics beside medical imaging and diagnostic technologies, before a specialisation semester offering tissue engineering and regenerative medicine alongside biomedical robotics and prosthetics.

The employer list follows the same logic. Graduates are pointed at hospitals and research institutes, at manufacturers of medical equipment and at pharmaceutical firms, in roles including biomedical engineer, product development specialist, clinical engineer and research scientist. Most of those posts sit inside organisations that deliver care or supply the equipment care depends on, rather than inside laboratories. The emphasis suits applicants who want to build and test equipment and are content to treat clinical requirements as a design constraint. Four full-time semesters are taught in English in Zurich, the last of them given over to independent research.
