University of Amsterdam (UvA)
Amsterdam, Netherlands

The syllabus works outward from the institutions of the European Union rather than from a single academic discipline. The opening semester takes in EU politics, the legal and institutional framework, economic integration, and external relations; the second moves to governance and policy analysis, foreign and security policy, and the social and human rights agenda, before a research project. Law, economics, and international relations are handled as facets of one subject, which is reflected in the Master of Arts classification.
The destinations follow that breadth. Graduates are directed toward policy advice, EU consultancy, diplomacy, and international relations work, based in governmental agencies, international organisations, and European institutions themselves. Applicants who want a single-discipline qualification in law or in economics will find this a different proposition, since the training here is in reading how those systems interact across borders. Teaching takes place in Amsterdam over a single year, in English, with on-campus attendance throughout.
The Master of Arts in European Policy (European Studies) is a one-year, full-time on-campus program that provides an in-depth understanding of European politics, policies, and integration. The program focuses on the political, economic, and social challenges facing the European Union, while also exploring key topics such as international relations and governance.
Graduates will be well-equipped for careers in European institutions, diplomacy, public policy, and international organizations. The University of Amsterdam (UvA) offers students access to expert faculty, extensive research opportunities, and an international network, ensuring they are prepared for influential roles in European affairs.
Semester 1 – Foundations in European Policy

The European Policy program focuses on the political and economic structures of the European Union and its influence on global affairs. Students gain expertise in EU law, policy-making, and international relations, preparing them for careers in European governance and policy analysis. The program’s global perspective ensures that graduates are equipped to navigate the complexities of European and international policy.
