European Union Studies

What shapes this degree is the second semester, which declines to specialise. External relations and foreign policy, economic and monetary union, and social and environmental regulation run in parallel, on top of a first semester covering the institutions, EU law and policy, and the political economy of the union. Graduates can therefore speak to external action, monetary governance and regulatory policy at once, which fits generalist posts in national ministries and international organisations better than a single-sector specialism would.

The year is taught in English on campus in Leiden, which keeps it open to applicants from outside the Netherlands, and the page points to internships with EU institutions and access to specialised research centres as part of that year. It closes with a supervised research project in European Union studies. Career directions given here are EU policy analysis, diplomacy and international development, with EU institutions and European-affairs agencies as employers.
