University of Amsterdam (UvA)
Amsterdam, Netherlands

Human-computer interaction is offered here as a specialization within the Information Studies master’s rather than as a standalone degree, which matters when reading the curriculum: the focus is interaction, but the parent program is an information science one and the award is a Master of Science. The work is evaluative as much as creative, placing prototyping and interface design alongside usability testing and the cognitive psychology that underpins interaction design.
The consequence for applicants is a particular kind of work. This is not a visual or graphic design master’s; it treats an interface as something to be tested and measured, and it extends to newer surfaces including virtual and augmented reality. The program runs for one year of full-time study in English at the university’s Amsterdam campus and ends in a research project. Graduates are pointed toward UX research, interaction design, interface development and human-computer interaction specialist roles at digital agencies, research institutions and technology companies.
The Master of Science in Human-Computer Interaction is a one-year, full-time on-campus program that focuses on the design and evaluation of interactive systems. The program covers key areas such as user experience (UX) design, cognitive psychology, interaction design, and usability testing, preparing students to create innovative, user-friendly technology solutions.
Graduates will be well-prepared for careers in human-computer interaction, UX design, and interaction research. The University of Amsterdam offers a collaborative environment with access to industry professionals, research opportunities, and expert faculty, ensuring students develop the skills needed to design and evaluate advanced interactive systems in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.
Semester 1 – Foundations in Human-Computer Interaction
Semester 2 – Advanced Human-Computer Interaction
Graduates of the Human-Computer Interaction Master’s program are highly sought after in industries such as user experience (UX) design, human-centered computing, software development, and interface design. With expertise in designing user-friendly and intuitive digital systems, graduates can work as UX researchers, interaction designers, UI developers, and human-computer interaction specialists. The demand for professionals skilled in creating seamless user experiences ensures ample career opportunities in tech companies, digital agencies, and research institutions.
The Human-Computer Interaction program combines principles of computer science, psychology, and design to create technology that enhances user experience. Students gain hands-on experience with user-centered design processes, prototyping, and usability testing. The program’s interdisciplinary approach ensures that graduates are well-equipped to work at the intersection of technology and human interaction, contributing to the development of cutting-edge digital interfaces.
