Karolinska Institute offers the Master’s Programme in Toxicology, a two-year, full-time, on-campus Master of Science program that focuses on understanding the adverse effects of chemical substances on human health and the environment. The program provides a strong foundation in cellular toxicology, molecular mechanisms of toxicity, risk assessment, and regulatory science, with an emphasis on evaluating the safety of pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and environmental agents.
Graduates develop expertise in chemical safety assessment and toxicological research methods, preparing for careers in regulatory agencies, pharmaceutical and chemical industries, environmental health organizations, and research institutions. The program equips students with the analytical and scientific tools needed to assess risks and contribute to the development of safer medicines and chemicals.
Semester 1 – Foundations of Toxicology
• Introduction to Toxicology and Environmental Health
• Principles of Toxicology and Mechanisms of Action
• Biochemical Toxicology and Molecular Mechanisms
• Research Methods in Toxicology
Semester 2 – Advanced Toxicology
• Toxicology of Pharmaceuticals and Chemicals
• Risk Assessment and Regulatory Toxicology
• Toxicokinetics and Toxicodynamics
• Elective Modules in Toxicology
Semester 3 – Specialized Toxicology

Graduates of the Toxicology program are well-prepared for careers in environmental health, pharmaceuticals, and regulatory affairs. They can work as toxicologists, environmental health specialists, regulatory compliance officers, and safety consultants. The increasing focus on environmental health and safety regulations across industries such as pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and manufacturing offers strong career opportunities for toxicologists. Graduates often work in research institutions, government agencies, pharmaceutical companies, and environmental health organizations.
The Toxicology program provides students with in-depth knowledge of the toxic effects of chemicals, drugs, and environmental agents on living organisms. Students learn to assess the safety of chemicals, study the effects of toxins, and develop strategies to prevent toxic exposure. The program’s practical approach, with opportunities for research and internships, ensures that graduates are well-prepared to work in the growing field of toxicology and contribute to health and safety standards.
