About

The Academy of Fine Arts, Munich (Akademie der Bildenden Künste München) is one of the oldest and most prominent art academies in Germany. Located in the Maxvorstadt district of Munich, Bavaria, the institution was formally established on 13 May 1808 by King Maximilian I Joseph of Bavaria, though its origins trace back to a drawing school founded in the late 18th century. Over the course of the 19th century it developed into an internationally renowned centre for painting and sculpture, attracting students from across Europe and North America.

As a specialised art academy rather than a general university, the school concentrates on the visual and fine arts. Teaching is organised largely around a class-based model in which students work within studios led by individual professors, each representing a distinct artistic approach, complemented by seminars, lectures and access to specialised workshops. Its programmes span fine art, art education and related fields such as interior architecture. In recent years the academy has enrolled roughly 669 students (2023), supported by a small academic faculty of around 36 teaching staff (2024).

The academy's long history is reflected in an exceptional roster of associated artists. Among its former students are Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Franz Marc, Giorgio de Chirico, Lovis Corinth, Alfred Kubin and Josef Albers, while figures such as Franz von Lenbach and, more recently, Sean Scully and Hito Steyerl have taught there. This heritage has made the institution a significant reference point in the development of modern European art, and it continues to operate today as a state-funded academy offering study at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
