About

Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) is a public, collegiate research university based in the city of Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh, northern India. Its origins reach back to 1875, when the reformer Sir Syed Ahmad Khan founded the Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College to widen access to modern education. In 1920 the college was reconstituted as a full university under the Aligarh Muslim University Act, and it has since grown into one of the country's most influential centres of learning.

Today AMU serves a community of roughly 30,000 students and operates as a largely residential institution, with academic departments, faculties and halls of residence spread across a historic central campus. Teaching and research reach across a broad spectrum of disciplines, including the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, engineering and technology, medicine, law and management, giving students the flexibility to pursue both traditional scholarship and applied, career-focused study.

The university is widely recognised for its academic standards, its long tradition of scholarship, and the contribution its graduates have made to public life, science, the arts and administration across India and beyond. Alongside classroom instruction, AMU places clear emphasis on research output and on a well-rounded student experience, supported by extensive libraries, laboratories, cultural societies and sporting facilities.

Situated at approximately 27.91°N, 78.08°E, the campus lies within reach of the wider Delhi–NCR region, connecting students to one of India's most dynamic economic and cultural corridors. For prospective applicants, AMU combines a storied institutional heritage, a diverse academic portfolio and an active residential community. Further details are available on the university's official website at amu.ac.in.
