Bauhaus-Universität Weimar is a public university in Weimar, Germany, devoted to the artistic and technical disciplines. Its origins reach back to 1860, when it opened as the Grand Ducal Saxon Art School, and it was granted collegiate status in 1910. In 1919 the architect Walter Gropius reorganised the school and gave it the name Bauhaus, launching one of the most influential movements in modern design. The institution adopted its present title in 1996, reaffirming the connection between its teaching and the Bauhaus heritage that began in this very city.
