About

Chiba University (千葉大学, Chiba Daigaku) is a national university based in Chiba Prefecture, Japan, on the eastern side of the greater Tokyo metropolitan area. Its origins reach back to 1872, and the institution was established in its present form as a national university in 1949 through the consolidation of several older colleges. Today it is regarded as one of Japan's leading public research universities and educates around 14,000 students.

The university is organised into nine faculties and spans a broad academic range, covering the natural sciences, engineering, medicine and health sciences, horticulture, the humanities and the social sciences. Teaching and research take place across several campuses — Nishi-Chiba, Inohana, Matsudo, Kashiwanoha and Sumida — each associated with particular fields, from the main science and engineering base at Nishi-Chiba to the medical and pharmaceutical schools at Inohana. This distributed structure lets the university maintain specialised facilities while encouraging cross-disciplinary collaboration.

Chiba University places strong emphasis on research and international partnership. It works with institutions around the world, runs student exchange schemes and English-taught courses, and supports projects that address global challenges in areas such as health, the environment and advanced technology. Its location close to Tokyo gives students access to one of the world's most active academic, cultural and economic hubs while studying within a self-contained campus community.

The combination of a long institutional history, a wide spread of disciplines and a research-driven culture makes Chiba University a notable destination for both Japanese and international students.
