History & Foundation
Istanbul Technical University was founded in 1773 as “Mühendishâne-i Bahrî-i Hümâyûn” under Sultan Mustafa III, initially focused on naval engineering and ship-building education. Over time, the institution expanded its mission to include architecture, civil engineering, and later all major engineering and architectural fields.
