The University of Television and Film Munich (Hochschule für Fernsehen und Film München, or HFF München) is a public film school located in the Bavarian capital of Munich, Germany. It was established on 19 July 1966 by decree of the Bavarian state government and admitted its first cohort of students during the 1967/68 academic year. Over the following decades it grew into one of Germany's most respected institutions dedicated exclusively to the moving image, training filmmakers across the full range of cinematic and television crafts.
As a specialised conservatory rather than a broad university, the school keeps enrolment deliberately small; roughly 268 students were registered as of 2023, taught by a compact faculty of around 84. Its programmes span disciplines such as feature and television directing, documentary filmmaking, production, screenwriting, and cinematography. The campus, housed in a purpose-built facility opened in 2011, includes several cinemas, a dedicated virtual-reality screening room, and multiple sound stages, giving students hands-on access to professional production environments. The institution is currently led by its president, Bettina Reitz.
The HFF München enjoys an international reputation and has repeatedly appeared on lists of the world's leading film schools compiled by trade publications such as Variety and The Hollywood Reporter. Its alumni include several internationally recognised directors, among them Wim Wenders and Roland Emmerich, as well as Academy Award winners Caroline Link, whose Nowhere in Africa took the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, and Florian Gallenberger, an Oscar recipient in the live-action short category. This record has helped cement the school's standing as a launchpad for German cinematic talent.
