A masters thesis is an independent research project that you plan, carry out and write up under a supervisor in the final stage of a master's degree. In the regulations we checked it carries between a fifth and a third of the degree's credits, and many universities also ask you to present or defend it orally. Not every master's has one: many programmes in the US, Turkey and elsewhere offer a non-thesis track that replaces it with extra courses, a project or an exam.
How much the thesis counts, how long you get and whether you can skip it depend on the country and the programme. The figures below come from official regulations we checked in October 2026, so you can compare like with like.

It is the part of a master's where you produce new work instead of being taught. You choose or are given a research question, review what is already known, collect or analyse data (or build something, in design and engineering subjects) and report the results in a long written document. A supervisor guides you, and examiners grade the final text.
The UK's Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) describes the pattern in its Master's Degree Characteristics Statement (third edition, February 2020). In taught master's such as the MSc, MA and MBA, "frequently, at least a third of the course is devoted to a research project" leading to a dissertation. In an MRes, at least half of the course is commonly research. The statement also notes that most master's degrees include a research project, "but this is not the case in all master's".
For a master's degree the two words usually mean the same document. British universities tend to say "dissertation" for a taught master's, while US, German and Turkish regulations say "thesis". In the US, "dissertation" is mostly kept for the PhD. Our guide to doctoral degrees vs the PhD covers that longer project. Read the term your own programme uses, because the rules attached to it (word limit, defence, deadline) are what count.
Not always. Whether you have to depends on the type of master's:
In a non-thesis master's you take more courses and finish with a smaller project, a scholarly paper or a comprehensive exam. The total length of the degree often stays the same. Two official examples show how the swap works.
United States: University of Maryland, MS in Mechanical Engineering (2026-2027 catalog)
Turkey: Middle East Technical University, graduate degree rules (page updated 31 August 2026)
METU notes that each institute board can set different curricula for individual programmes, so always read the programme page as well. You can compare the two tracks on Stuudy. Istanbul Technical University lists Offshore Engineering both with and without a thesis: on our programme pages, the thesis track ends with a research thesis and defence, and the non-thesis track ends with an internship and a capstone project. Middle East Technical University offers similar pairs, such as Biomedical Engineering (thesis) and Cyber Security (non-thesis). Our Turkey country page has more on studying there.

There is no single length. Regulations usually set the workload in credits and a time limit, and leave the page or word count to the programme.
If your programme publishes a word limit, ask early whether it includes tables, references and appendices, because the rules differ.
Usually one semester, sometimes two. The TUM regulations allow at most six months between the date your topic is registered and submission. A thesis not handed in on time without a valid reason counts as failed. TUM also expects the thesis to be the last exam of the degree, and you can start early only after earning 45 of the 60 compulsory credits and 6 elective credits.
For writing up results you already have, sometimes. For the whole project, usually not: the official time limit we checked is longer (up to six months at TUM). The parts that take time are getting a topic approved, ethics clearance for work with people, and data collection. Start these first.
Theses are graded by examiners, and many programmes end with a presentation or oral defence. The University of Maryland, Baltimore, Graduate School's 2025-2026 catalog is a typical US example:
In the UK, QAA says research master's theses are "commonly defended in an oral examination". For taught master's the university decides, so check your programme handbook.
You normally get one more attempt. At TUM, a thesis graded worse than 4.0 ("sufficient") may be repeated once with a new topic, which you must register within six weeks of receiving the grade. At Glasgow, a dissertation graded E1 or below may be reassessed on one occasion only, and the grade after reassessment is capped at D3.

Most master's theses follow the same outline, although humanities theses may combine some chapters:
Your programme handbook decides the details: the citation style, whether chapters can be published papers, the language and the word limit. At TUM Management, for example, the thesis must be written in English.
Thesis checklist before you start: confirm the credit weight and deadline in your programme regulations; agree a topic and supervisor and register the topic (at TUM the six-month clock starts then); apply for ethics approval if you work with people; ask how often you will meet your supervisor (Liverpool Hope's norm is about 4 recorded meetings for a 60-credit dissertation); check the word limit and what it excludes; book the defence date early if your programme requires one.
The thesis rules differ more between programmes than most brochures suggest. When you compare master's degrees abroad, check four things for each one:
If you are considering Germany, where the thesis is a standard part of the degree, our guide to a master's in Germany explains admission and fees. When you have a shortlist, the how to apply guide walks you through the application.
