History & Foundation

Middle East Technical University was founded in 1956 under the name “Middle East Institute of Technology” and later took its current name via Law No 7907. It is rooted in the vision of contributing to the development of Turkey and the Middle East by educating professionals in technical and scientific fields.

Over the decades, METU has expanded its mission to include major faculties in engineering, architecture, economics, education, and the natural & social sciences. Its main campus is renowned for its large green campus area, including forests and Lake Eymir.
