The Master of Science in Applied Geophysics at ETH Zurich - Swiss Federal Institute of Technology is a two-year, full-time on-campus program that focuses on studying the Earth’s physical properties using quantitative and computational methods. The program covers key areas such as seismic imaging, gravity and magnetic methods, geophysical data analysis, and subsurface modeling, combining physics, mathematics, and Earth sciences. Students develop strong analytical and technical skills to investigate the structure and processes of the Earth’s subsurface.
Graduates are well-prepared for geoscience careers in energy companies, environmental consultancies, research institutes, and geological surveys, as well as for doctoral studies. With a strong emphasis on subsurface exploration and geophysical modeling, the program equips students with the expertise needed to analyze Earth systems and support resource exploration and environmental assessment.
Semester 1 – Foundations in Applied Geophysics
Semester 2 – Advanced Applied Geophysics
Semester 3 – Specialization in Applied Geophysics
Semester 4 – Master’s Thesis & Research Project
Graduates of the Applied Geophysics Master’s program are well-prepared for careers in geophysical exploration, environmental consultancy, oil and gas industries, and mineral exploration. They can work as geophysicists, exploration geologists, seismic analysts, and environmental consultants. With the growing demand for sustainable resource management and exploration technologies, graduates have strong career prospects in mining, energy, and environmental sectors.
The Applied Geophysics program focuses on the use of geophysical techniques to explore the Earth’s structure and resources. Students gain expertise in seismic imaging, geophysical surveying, and environmental impact analysis, preparing them for careers in resource exploration and environmental consulting. The program emphasizes both fieldwork and laboratory techniques, ensuring that graduates are well-equipped to apply geophysical methods to a wide range of scientific and industrial challenges.
