Most of what characterises this degree happens at the bench. Alongside the theory, organic, inorganic and physical chemistry in the opening semester with thermodynamics and kinetics beside them, the training is built around laboratory practice and instrumentation, and analytical chemistry and spectroscopic techniques form a substantial block of the second semester. Reading a result off an instrument, not only off a page, is a large part of the work.
Two threads then shape where the qualification can lead. The analytical and instrumental side maps onto laboratory and research-and-development posts in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries; the green chemistry and sustainability module points instead towards environmental consultancy and materials science, both of which appear among the listed graduate destinations. The third semester brings the two together in an independent thesis, supported by data analysis in the chemical sciences and closing with a research portfolio.
The Master of Science in Chemistry at ETH Zurich - Swiss Federal Institute of Technology is a 1.5-year, full-time on-campus program that focuses on advanced chemical sciences and their applications in research and industry.
