University of Amsterdam (UvA)
Amsterdam, Netherlands

The qualification awarded here is a Master of Laws, not a business or finance master’s, and that determines the center of gravity. Finance supplies the subject matter — corporate financing and governance, securities and banking regulation, transactions and takeovers — but it is approached through legal rules and regulatory frameworks. Applicants arriving from a finance or economics background should expect legal reasoning to be the working method throughout.
One year full-time in Amsterdam leaves little slack between foundational material and the research project that closes the program, so the format favors candidates who already know they want to work at the boundary between the two fields rather than use the year to explore it. The employers identified for graduates sit on both sides of that boundary — investment banks, law firms and regulatory bodies in government — with roles in corporate law, legal advisory work and financial regulation. Instruction is in English.
The Master of Laws in Law and Finance is a one-year, full-time on-campus program that bridges the gap between legal and financial disciplines. The program covers areas such as corporate law, financial markets, mergers and acquisitions, and regulatory frameworks, equipping students with the legal knowledge and financial skills necessary to navigate complex financial transactions.
Graduates will be well-prepared for careers in financial law, investment banking, corporate governance, and legal consulting. The University of Amsterdam (UvA) offers access to expert faculty, real-world case studies, and a global network, ensuring students are equipped to lead in the intersection of law and finance.
