This programme is organised around a problem rather than around a single science. The question it keeps returning to is how an industrial production system can be made to run efficiently, predictably and with less waste, and answering it draws on mechanical engineering, chemical engineering and control theory at once. That is why chemical engineering fundamentals, reaction engineering, process dynamics and control, and process design as a systems discipline all appear within the first two semesters.
Because the problem itself is generic, the qualification travels across industries that otherwise have little in common: food production, chemicals, pharmaceuticals and energy are all named as destinations, in roles running from process engineer and production manager to research and development specialist and sustainability consultant. The closing semester narrows all of it onto one case through the thesis, supported by data modelling and simulation, the techniques that make moving between those industries possible in the first place.
The Master of Science in Process Engineering at ETH Zurich - Swiss Federal Institute of Technology is a 1.5-year, full-time on-campus program that focuses on the design, optimization, and control of industrial processes. The program integrates principles from mechanical engineering, thermodynamics, and chemical processes to develop efficient and sustainable production systems. Students gain in-depth knowledge of process modeling, simulation, and system optimization, supported by ETH Zurich’s advanced research infrastructure and industry collaborations.
