The Technical University of Berlin (Technische Universität Berlin, or TU Berlin) is a public research university in the German capital. Its origins reach back to 1879, when the Royal Technical College of Berlin was formed through the merger of the earlier Building Academy and Trade Academy. After the disruption of the Second World War, the institution reopened in 1946 and became the first German university to carry the title "Technische Universität," a name that has since been adopted by technical universities across the country.
Located mainly in the Charlottenburg district of Berlin, TU Berlin educates roughly 35,000 students, making it one of the largest technical universities in Germany. Its academic profile is built around engineering and the natural sciences, but the university deliberately combines these with planning, economics, humanities, and the social sciences. This breadth is reflected in its seven faculties, which together cover fields such as mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and computer science, civil and environmental engineering, mathematics, physics, chemistry, process engineering, architecture, urban planning, and management.
Research is central to the university's identity. TU Berlin is a member of TU9, the alliance of Germany's leading institutes of technology, and it maintains close ties with industry, research institutes, and start-up communities in and around Berlin. These connections give students access to well-equipped laboratories, extensive libraries, and opportunities to work on applied projects alongside experienced researchers.
With a large international community of students and staff, TU Berlin offers programmes at bachelor's, master's, and doctoral levels, many of them taught with a strong practical and interdisciplinary orientation. Its central location in Berlin, a city known for engineering, technology, and innovation, adds to its appeal for students seeking a research-focused education in Germany.
