Established in 1994, Başkent University is the third foundation university in Turkey. Three campuses are located in Ankara, the capital of the country. The university prioritises scientific research and has become one of the leading Turkish research universities. It stands out in medicine, being a pioneer in organ transplant and operating research centres, hospitals, and dialysis centres across Turkey. According to the Turkish Measuring, Selection and Placement Center, Başkent is the most preferred foundation university in Ankara.

The university offers over 60 undergraduate, 140 graduate, and 40 doctoral programmes in nine faculties and has more than 120 student clubs. Approximately 3% of its students are international, representing 53 countries worldwide.

History & Foundation

The foundations of Başkent University were laid in 1980 by Dr. Mehmet Haberal, a pioneer in organ transplant and the founder of the Turkish Organ Transplantation and Burn Treatment Foundation. Dr. Haberal and his team, who went down in Turkish history by performing the first successful kidney transplant of the country in 1975, continued their transplantation studies at the foundation hospital, which formed the basis of Başkent University. Since then, this hospital has been the home of many breakthrough medical studies and operations, especially those concerning organ transplant.

The university was officially founded in 1994 with the cooperation of the Turkish Organ Transplant and Burns Treatment Foundation and the Haberal Education Foundation. Başkent is also the first foundational university in Turkey which conducts scientific studies in medicine and offers healthcare services, and continues to have a wide range of research centres, hospitals, and dialysis centres all around Turkey.

Education & Research

The university offers over 60 undergraduate, over 140 graduate, and over 40 doctoral programmes in nine faculties. Approximately 3% of the students come from 53 countries. 61% of all the students in Başkent are receiving some financial aid. Aside from having a wide range of programmes that offer a science-based, comprehensive education, Başkent University is also the only foundation university which has a State Conservatory for aspiring musicians.

The university has collaboration agreements with 200 universities abroad, giving the opportunity to have an exchange semester or do an internship in countries all around the world as well as participating in international projects. Furthermore, Başkent is affiliated with Siemens, and students in related programmes have the opportunity to do an internship in Siemens, Germany via the Siemens Impleap Programme.

To ensure students receive a well-rounded education and enjoy their academic lives, Başkent University has a vast, green and sustainable campus complete with a health centre, many cafes and restaurants, and even a hairdresser.

Başkent University and its affiliate hospitals as well as research centres have taken part in many breakthrough studies in medicine, especially in the field of organ transplant. The university prides itself in being a scientific, research-oriented university, and hugely supports the research projects of both its academic staff and students.

The university has 38 application and research centres all around Turkey, in a variety of fields from Migration Studies to Artificial Intelligence. In addition, it has over 25 hospitals and health facilities in 11 Turkish cities.

Career

During their studies, Başkent University students have ample opportunity to prepare for their professional life via the various research and application centres in the university as well as the companies and institutes the university collaborates with.

The Career Guidance Centre of the university organises many career expositions, seminars, and conferences to connect field professionals with students. The centre also provides career counselling, planning, and helps prepare students in subjects such as CV preparation and job interviews through many workshops and courses.
