About

Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, widely known as KIT, is a public research university located in Karlsruhe in the state of Baden-Württemberg, in south-western Germany. It holds a distinctive dual status: alongside being a fully fledged university, it also operates as a large-scale research centre within the Helmholtz Association, Germany's biggest scientific research organisation. This combination gives KIT an unusually strong focus on the natural sciences, engineering and applied research, and places it among the country's leading technical institutions.

KIT in its present form was established in 2009 through the merger of two long-standing institutions: the University of Karlsruhe, whose origins trace back to the founding of the Polytechnic School of Karlsruhe in 1825, and the Karlsruhe Research Centre. Because of this heritage, KIT counts among the oldest technical universities in Germany, with a scientific tradition rooted in the nineteenth century that today extends across information technology, physics, chemistry, mechanical and electrical engineering, mathematics and the economic sciences.

The university welcomes a student body of roughly 25,000, drawn from across Germany and around the world, and sustains a wide network of research collaborations and international partnerships. Its campuses are spread across the city of Karlsruhe, a mid-sized university city close to the French border and the Black Forest, offering students a comparatively affordable and well-connected place to study within Germany.

On Stuudy, prospective applicants can currently explore 18 programmes offered by Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, making it easier to compare study options in engineering, the sciences and related fields and to plan an application to this established German research university.
