Otto Friedrich University Bamberg traces its origins to 1647, founded as Academia Bambergensis by Prince-Bishop Melchior Otto Voit von Salzburg. It was expanded into a full university by Prince-Bishop Friedrich Karl von Schönborn in the 18th century.

After a period of transformation, the university was re-established in 1972 and named Otto-Friedrich-Universität Bamberg in 1988 to honor its founders.
