RPTU University Kaiserslautern-Landau is a public research university in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. It was established on 1 January 2023, when the Landau campus of the former University of Koblenz and Landau was merged with the Technical University of Kaiserslautern and the combined institution adopted a new name. Readers who know either predecessor should note that both now describe parts of the same university: the Kaiserslautern side traces its own origins to 1970, while Landau was added as a second location. RPTU operates across two campuses, in Kaiserslautern and in Landau in der Pfalz, and enrols roughly 17,000 students.
Teaching and research lean towards engineering and the natural sciences, a profile inherited from Kaiserslautern's history as a technical university. Subjects taught there include computer science, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, civil and mechanical engineering, architecture, and business studies, with computer science a long-standing area of focus. The Landau campus broadens that range considerably, contributing education sciences, psychology, and environmental and social sciences, so the merged university spans a wider disciplinary field than either predecessor did alone. Programmes are offered at bachelor's, master's, and doctoral level, and the university employs more than 1,300 academic staff out of a total workforce of about 2,600.
Kaiserslautern is unusual for the density of non-university research institutes clustered near the campus, and RPTU works closely with several of them. They include two Fraunhofer institutes based in the city, one concentrating on experimental software engineering and the other on industrial mathematics, together with the Max Planck Institute for Software Systems and the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence, which maintains one of its principal sites there. That concentration has made software and artificial intelligence a defining part of the local research landscape. The university also belongs to cross-border academic networks linking institutions in Germany, France, and the wider Greater Region.
