History & Foundation

The Technical University of Darmstadt (TU Darmstadt) was founded in 1877 as one of Germany’s first polytechnic schools with university status. From the beginning, it established itself as a pioneer in engineering and the natural sciences, becoming the first university worldwide to set up an independent chair in electrical engineering in 1882.
