Delft University of Technology (TU Delft; Dutch: Technische Universiteit Delft) is a public technical university located in Delft, in the western Netherlands. It is the oldest and largest public technical university in the country, and one of its principal centres for engineering education and research.
The university traces its origins to 8 January 1842, when it was established as a Royal Academy for the training of civil engineers. Over the following decades the institution broadened its scope and was reorganised several times before adopting its present name and full university status. Today it enrols roughly 27,000 students across undergraduate, master's and doctoral programmes, supported by a staff of several thousand academic and technical personnel.
TU Delft is organised into eight faculties, spanning aerospace engineering; applied sciences; architecture and the built environment; civil engineering and geosciences; electrical engineering, mathematics and computer science; industrial design engineering; mechanical engineering; and technology, policy and management. Its academic profile is concentrated in engineering, technology, design and the natural sciences, with a strong emphasis on both applied and fundamental research. The university belongs to several international networks, including the IDEA League and the CESAER association of engineering universities, and it forms part of the 4TU federation of Dutch technical universities. The independent ranking platform EduRank places it fifth among universities in the Netherlands and 137th of more than 14,000 institutions worldwide, reflecting its research output and international standing.
Acceptance rate is an EduRank estimate — modelled from comparable institutions for universities that do not publish an official figure (2026). Verify with the university before applying.
