About

Utrecht University (Dutch: Universiteit Utrecht) is a public research university in the city of Utrecht, in the central Netherlands. Established in 1636, it is among the oldest universities in the country. It was formerly known as Rijksuniversiteit Utrecht ("State University of Utrecht"), and today it ranks among the Netherlands' largest and most research-intensive institutions.

The university is organized into seven faculties: Geosciences; Humanities; Law, Economics and Governance; Medicine; Science; Social and Behavioural Sciences; and Veterinary Medicine. As of 2025 it enrolled approximately 38,000 students and employed around 4,500 academic staff, with total personnel of roughly 8,800. While it retains historic buildings in the medieval city centre, most teaching and research now takes place at Utrecht Science Park (formerly De Uithof), a large campus on the eastern edge of the city that also hosts affiliated research institutes and the university medical centre.

Utrecht belongs to several international academic networks, including the League of European Research Universities (LERU), the Coimbra Group, and the Utrecht Network. It is historically associated with a number of Nobel Prize laureates among its faculty and alumni, and is frequently noted for research strength in fields such as earth and environmental sciences, veterinary medicine, and public administration. The independent aggregator EduRank ranks Utrecht second among Dutch universities and within the top 100 worldwide in its 2026 edition. The institution offers a broad range of bachelor's, master's, and doctoral programmes, a growing number of them taught in English, and plays a central role in the Dutch and wider European research landscape.
